Join Us as a Visiting Scholar or Postdoc

We are happy to host researchers who care about the same things as we do. If you would like to join us as a visiting scholar or postdoc researcher, please send all enquiries to: here@manchester.ac.uk

In your email, please attach a current CV and include the following information:

  • what role you’re looking for in HERE (postdoc, PhD, visiting scholar – see below);
  • what your research would involve, and why Manchester is a good place to do it;
  • which of our colleagues you’d most like to work with;
  • how your time with us would be funded.

Join us as a PostDoc (postdoctoral researcher)

If you’re early in your research career and want to develop your work somewhere collaborative, supportive, and demanding in a friendly way, then we’d like to hear from you. Postdocs at MIE are part of the research community: working with staff and PhD researchers, attending seminars, and building contacts across the University, Greater Manchester and further afield.

We’re interested in hearing from you if:

  • you’ve finished a doctorate in education or a related subject, or you’re about to;
  • your work connects with what people at MIE research, whether an individual colleague or one of our research groups;
  • you’d like to apply for an external fellowship with our support.

Please note that HERE does not currently have opportunities for directly funding postdoctoral positions. However, we are happy to work with individuals who would like to apply for early career researcher grants or fellowships to take place in MIE. You can find more information about known funded postdoc programmes at:

Join us as a Visiting Scholar

We welcome academics, researchers, and practitioners from anywhere in the world who want to spend time with us, whether that’s to get on with your own project, swap ideas with us, or collaborate on a particular topic of interest.

Visitors help us to see our own work differently and often leave us with lifelong partnerships. While you’re here, you’ll be able to join research seminars and workshops, access our facilities and libraries, and talk informally with colleagues and PhD researchers.

Visits go best when everyone involved is clear about what they want, so please reach out to us with:

  • a summary of your research interests or a specific project you’d like to work on while visiting;
  • information about which of our members you’d like to work with;
  • information about how your work relates to what MIE researches and why you specifically want to be in Manchester;
  • details about what you want to get out of your visit and what you can bring to it;

Visits can last anywhere from a few weeks to a year, depending on your needs and our colleagues’ availability to host you. Please note that formal visiting scholar roles require an application process to our university, which can take between 3-6 months for approval. Visiting scholars are responsible for funding their own visits and arranging for visas for their stay, if needed (with information provided during the formal application process).

As a visiting scholar with HERE, we typically ask that you contribute the following during your time with us:

  • A presentation about your research to the research group
  • A training on a topic of your choice for our PhD researchers
  • Guest lectures on our teaching modules, as relevant
